Sad News -- Paul Castiglione's father Vito has passed away.

Kathy writes:  Paul’s dad, Vito, passed away Friday afternoon.  His funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Castroville at St. Louis Catholic Church.

Thanks for your prayers and love.  1/29/2012

Tommy Atkins (with Jan)

has made strides recovering from knee replacement surgery.  Dr. Burns said all went well.  "I want strokes," was his comment to wife Jan over the phone.  Jim Chambers put the quietus right away on that request, we hear. 1/28/12

Tommy sent in some photos he would like used and portrayed in future ID shots.  The shots were a bit confusing, so we thought it might behoove us to simply ask for MGA guy's preferences.  Choose 1,2, or 3.  (James, we learned, liked Number 3.)

If you read the Picayune this week, you saw a photo of two of our most comely ladies: Marilyn Greene and Ann Sadler.  It was the Art Guild.  Marilyn is treasurer; Ann secretary.1/26/12

(Even though named "Art Guild", rest assured there is no connection to Art Greene.)

Jay Harbison

had shoulder surgery Friday for rotator cuff repair along with some arthritis scrapings and came out like new.   That of course is an overstatement, but his doctor, Dr. Robertson, was pleased.  Ask Mac about the recovery.  Jay was able to rest most of the night and is not in serious pain (with help from some pills) and is right on schedule with a round of physical therapy starting soon. 1/21/2012

Art Greene

took a spill near the dumpsters area .   Not a friendly fall, either.  Our boy broke his wrist and gashed his forehead --- had a bunch of stitches, 7 in all to close up the gash.  (No, he wasn't dumpster diving! and no, a cheese head, he wasn't reacting to Green Bay's colossal loss to NY.)  Good Samaritan Paula Cox  (Bluebird Dr.) driving by saw he was in distress and jumped in to help, got him home and to the emergency room in MF.  It's good to have such neighbors ready to help.  1/16/12

My boss phoned me today.
He said, "Is everything okay at the office?"
I said, "Yes, it's all under control.   It's been a very busy day, I haven't stopped."
"Can you do me a favor?" he asked.
I said, "Of course, what is it?”
He said, "Hurry up and take your shot, I'm in the foursome behind you."

New Federal Golf Rules
These new golf rules will be in effect beginning January 1 of 2012. Please share them with fellow golfers.

President BHO has recently appointed a Golf Czar and major rule changes in the game of golf will become effective November 1,2011. This is only a preview as the complete rule book (expect 2000 pages) is being rewritten as we speak. Here are a few of the changes.

Golfers with handicaps:
- below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35%.
- between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees.
- above 18 will get a $20 check each time they play.

The term
"gimmie" will be changed to "entitlement" and will be used as follows:
- handicaps below 10, no entitlements.
- handicaps from 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts.
- handicaps above 18, if your ball is on green, no need to putt, just pick it up.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness and, most importantly, equality in scoring. In addition, a Player will be limited to a maximum of one birdie or six pars in any given 18-hole round. Any excess must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par. Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player actually making the birdie or par, can that player begin to count his pars and birdies again.

The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes, but the term "net score" will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps of 18 and above.

This is intended to "re-distribute" the success of winning by making sure that in every competition, the above 18 handicap players will post only "net score" against every other player's "gross score". These new Rules are intended to CHANGE the game of golf.

Golf
must be about Fairness. It should have nothing to do with ability, hard work, practice, and responsibility. This is the "Right thing to do."

Sarah Williams sent this along.  1/4/2012

Congratulations!

Texas Longhorns win 21-10 over Cal. at the Holiday Bowl.

Baylor wins the Alamo Bowl 67-56 over Washington.  That's football -- not basketball.

Christmas tree with starOur Annual Christmas Party came off like clockwork.  Saucy's was the caterer.  Between 90 and 95 tickets were sold; 3 did not show up.  Lou Ann Webb, the real superwoman, put it all together.  The Spangenberg's (Ron and Angie) brought the music gear and there was some great karaoke.  In fact the ladies got caught up in the mood and the participation was wild.  (Even suave, urbane Don Webb was among the dancers.)

Sharon's entire family were our mixers (the beverage type) and they did an admirable job.  They had one of everything.  What a deal!

We have a some shots: Big Composite -- Little Composite.  Just punch.  (You might need to use Cntl + or Cntl - for size adjustments.)

 C and C

- 'twas a hoot indeed.  Bart Oxley emceed and gave some very interesting tidbits about the first Thanksgiving.  A job well-done, this was Bart's first public speaking event since he had his stroke a year ago.  We can say for Bart, "No problemo."

He welcomed Dede Haussner and the Dering's back.  He also welcomed to the group guests Peter and Kathy Jones.  Peter is a candidate for Precinct 1, Llano Commissioners Court.  He introduced himself and gave a short biography.

Winners of the drawing were:  Michael Walsh, a Chili's gift certificate and that cutie Mary Beth, one for Bella Sera's.

For the record, 51 attended and all, to a man, were delighted to be there.  And why not?  The host and hostess crew of Sharon Bowen, Mary Beth Beale, Janis Bosco, and Bart and Rella Oxley, a crew that had the room decorated beautifully, did a great job.  What more could one ask for?  Duh!

The food was, as it always is, good, plentiful and nicely presented.  The hors d'oeuvres table cannot be fully described.  Shrimp, poppers, dips -- the list goes on and on.  Desserts were superb, too.  Lots of variety, all tasty and sweet. 11/10/2011

The MGA/WGA combined golf tournament on the 3rd, an annual event, brought out 30 of  Blue Lakes's finest, including 11 lovely WGA types.  Here are the results:

  • First ($30): Team Chambers: Jim, Bonnie Whittle, Susan Valentine, Bill Murphy, and this writer, Bill Curtis.
  • Second ($15): Team Tarver: Eldon, Dede Haussner, Paul Castiglione, and Jo Middaugh.
  • Third ($12): Team Kepner: Greg, Bob Westbrook, Leah Roust, and Chris Williams.
  • Others were Mac McConahy, Kathy Castiglione, Christine Nicknish, Tom and Jerry Robinson, Bruce Lomax, Sally Lavine, Jim Buckingham, Jerry Campbell, Billy Blair, Herb Kaufman, Sue Burkhalter, John Buford, C.L. and Charlene Newsome, Nettie Blair, Bud Goodman,

Chilly and some wind gusts, the day was clear and the course was quite playable in spite of recent over-seeding and sanding.  Temperatures were in the 40s at the start, but as the day wore on, the chill quickly subsided making golfing very enjoyable.

Mac McConahy was not up to his usual zest for the game as he is heading to the hospital next week for a shoulder operation.

The MGA provided lunch; the WGA women participants were guests.  The food, a Mexican theme, was provided by Ruth and Dick Draper and Barb and Jay Harbison.  It was a quite a meal, too: chicken enchiladas, tacos, beans and Spanish rice.  For dessert, homemade brownies, lemon cake, ice cream, all delicious.  Mucho accolades go to the Drapers and the Harbisons.  "Fue fantastico."   (a little Spanish, there.)

The MGA is looking forward to a turkey shoot next week following golf.  11/4/2011

Sanding O' The Greens

happened Monday, the 24th.

11 AM, Hamburgers afterward.

The crew doing all the work was composed of the usual club riffraff: Jim Buckingham, Paul Castiglione, Bruce Lomax, Eldon Tarver, C.L. Newsome, Doug Miller, Gary Cassell, and yours truly, Bill Curtis.  Doug and Jim supplied their 4-wheels making the process go more smoothly than it would otherwise.  Doug, Jim, and C.L. did the seed spreading, and the remainder, the sweat-hogs, supplied the muscle, fetching and shoveling sand into the spreader.  Brian supplied the moxie to do the job right, of course.

A few glitches added drama to the day's efforts.  The Cushman exhibited rear axle strains, probably a bearing going bad. It worked all day in spite of early doubts arising from the strange noises coming from the bad wheel.

Larry Meyers (how could we function without him?) fetched the hamburgers from Hole-in-One, Moe's new enterprise.  These guys deserve a mega-attaboy.

While everyone is moaning and groaning about the changes brought on by the new Longhorn Network, UT's exclusive 24 hour sports channel, there's reason to take heart. The AAS still lists Texas Tech and A&M games on Page 2 of the TV and Radio listings.  OK, forget the TV part.  It's all radio.  Nevertheless, the generous AAS has provided both play-by-play AM or FM radio call letters with the listing, making fans happy.  One doesn't have to hunt for the games at all.  So, when  you see C.L., Gary, and Bob with their heads hanging down, tell them to look on the bright side.

Snoop Bob Winn reports the camera covering the dumpster area is in place and ready to go. (No, Jerry Campbell, you cannot go there to have your family portrait made.)

Note that the dumpsters are now temporarily located by the golf clubhouse while Blue Lake Road is being resurfaced.  After that, Warner Tweed and Betty Brooker intend to make use of the camera and nail miscreants using the dumpsters improperly.

Mr. Bill and Rosemary,

Go to fullsize imageMy employer, Dr. Robinson was attacked by a rabid fox while working outside his ranch home on Wednesday morning.  He suffered major cuts and bites to his shoulder, neck, arm and face.    He is now undergoing very painful and expensive rabies injections for the next month.  The head of the fox was sent to Animal Control for testing and rabies was confirmed on Friday.  The rabid fox charged him and literally jumped on him from 10 ft away.  This horrible incident is the 30th confirmed case of rabid fox in Burnet Co.  and the 3rd case of humans being attacked by these infected animals.  (An elderly lady was attacked while watering her plants on her back patio and a 3 year old boy was bitten while playing outside his home in Burnet Co)

BLUE LAKE SPECIAL

This year's annual event was the best ever.  Great comaraderie and fun.  The game was 6 holes each of 2-man scramble, best ball, and rotation.  It was interesting in that it forced the MGAers to think, a novelty in itself.  Leah remarked it was aimed at developing mental acuity, and heaven knows we in the MGA need that!

Here's the outcome:

First:   Jerry Robinson and Charlene Newsome
Second:  Jim Chambers and Lou Ann Webb
Third:  Bob Burkhalter and Sarah Williams

With the weather, the organization, the food, and more, the ladies have set a high standard indeed.  Jim Chambers' only regret was that it is done only once a year.  "Why not quarterly?" he opined.

Did we mention food?  There was plenty of it: chili, salad, corn bread muffin and lots to drink such as beer, wine, ice tea.  Even the dessert was extraordinary: ice cream and several chocolate-y things to top off the meal.

But the pièce de résistance was a hole-in-one made by Charlene Newsome on Number 8.  Playing this quality of golf and having the talent to drag Jerry along, is it any wonder she won first?

Email Suggestions

Call it courtesy, being nice, whatever, but do read this article, especially those who may be new to email.  Also, some of our old users may need a refresher in email standards, standards that help one to be more considerate of those to whom we send messages.

The list of dos and don'ts has been around for some time, and using it will help minimize your exposure to span, viruses, and junk messages.  It will also protect those you send email to by reducing their exposure to bad stuff that one can inadvertently, and unknowingly send along.    2/27/2010

The Difference Between http and https

Just in case you are not aware

The main difference between  http:/// and https://............

It's all about keeping you secure - HTTP stands for Hyper Text
Transport Protocol.  The S (big surprise)stands for "Secure".  If
you visit a web site or web page, and look at the address in the web
browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.
This means that the web site is talking to your browser using the
regular '
unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for
someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the
website. If you fill out a form on the web site, someone might see
the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http
website!  But if the web address begins with https:// that basically means
your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no
one can eavesdrop on.

Understand why this is so important?

If a web site ever asks you to enter your credit card information,
you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with
https://. ;; If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive
information like a credit card number.

PASS IT ON (You may save someone a lot of grief).
